MARION COUNTY, Ore. – A 26-year-old man from Keizer died Sunday afternoon after his pickup truck collided with an 18-wheeler on Interstate 5, according to Oregon State Police.
The crash happened around 2:39 p.m. near milepost 272 in Marion County and involved four vehicles.
Investigators say the driver, Didier Lair Fuentes, was merging onto the southbound lanes of I-5 from Highway 214 in a Chevrolet Silverado when he made a sharp left turn across traffic. His truck moved directly into the path of a Western Star semi-truck pulling a trailer, driven by Manmohan Singh, 36, from Surrey, British Columbia.
The semi-truck hit Fuentes’ pickup on the side, causing the truck to jackknife across the highway and slam into a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Jeff David Peterson, 63, also from Keizer. The Jeep was pushed into the median and dragged several feet.
A Toyota Matrix, driven by Ashley Danielle Peugh, 34, of Murphy, Idaho, managed to avoid the main crash but was hit by flying debris.
Fuentes was taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive. Police say Singh and Peterson were not hurt, while Peugh had minor injuries.
The highway was shut down for about four hours as police investigated and cleared the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
